For conservation reasons, a restoration workshop was established at the Gleimhaus in 1988, which has been located in the modern extension building since 1995. Damage to prints, books and manuscripts can be treated here. The collection departments and the paper restoration workshop work together to develop conservation concepts for the collection on the basis of the latest scientific findings. The Gleimhaus is a member of the Verband der Restauratoren (VDR, Association of Conservators). Please contact us for the processing of your orders. As an institution preserving cultural assets, we are aware of our responsibility and are an active part of the Notfallverbunds Kulturgutschutz Harz (Cultural Property Protection Emergency Network in the Harz region).
The historical library of the Gleimhaus houses around 12,000 books from the 15th to the early 19th century. These include numerous prints of great value. In many cases, there are also provenance marks, such as handwritten entries by their authors or owners, which emphasise the uniqueness of these books and tell a story. The very good storage conditions for the books, which are now in the modern extension to the Gleimhaus, were unfortunately not always this ideal. In particular, the removal of the collection during the Second World War has left its mark. The return of so-called “Beutebüchern" (looted books) from Georgia in 1997 inflicted damage to a large number of books, which had suffered inadequate storage conditions, back to the Gleimhaus. As restoration is a lengthy and costly process, a book sponsorship programme intends to contribute to the preservation and conservation of these valuable cultural treasures.
The catalogue of damaged books includes a selection of works that are in particularly urgent need of restoration. Donations are tax-deductible and each donor receives a donation receipt for the amount donated. The Gleimhaus is also grateful for partial donations that enable collective sponsorship.
Subject to consent, all book sponsors will be named publicly on our website, in the regular publication of the supporter association Förderkreis Gleimhaus e.V., the "Gemeinnützige Blätter" (Philanthropic Papers) and also with the corresponding title in the online catalogue. Book sponsorships already awarded can be found here.
If you are interested in sponsoring a book, please select a book from the catalogue of books in need of restoration and contact Mrs Annegret Loose, or write to: Das Gleimhaus Halberstadt, Domplatz 31, 38820 Halberstadt.
